Warning
I don't recommend to the reader to use this layout for themselves. But it's what I've used since the start. I think it's fine for me and no worse than gamecube controller. The default box layout is probably stronger, so the reader should stick to that.
Notable Changes in my Layout
- I play fox this is my layout on my Gramctrl Smash
- My right hand homerow is on top because I have bigger palms. And IMO it's easier to slide downward than upward for inputs across rows. This means I can wavedash by sliding my right index finger downward (though I only do this for wavedash out of shield).
- My right index finger is jump, and my right middle finger is wavedash. Most people use the other way, but I found it easier to short hop with my index, and wavedash was fine in this configuration.
- B / C stick cluster (right thumb)
- my cstick is cycled because with the defaul layout, I thought c-left and c-right were too far apart. With my layout, cleft and cright are directly next to each other. Sometimes you don't know if you want to c-left or c-right until late. (Note for me, my C left button is the most awkward to press of all the relevant bbuttons). C-Up there is easy enough for up airs and upsmashes so it's fine.
- B (and X, and R) are where they are because it unlocks the same muscle memory as when I played on gcc in claw (index finger jump, middle finger shield, thumb b/c-stick). This made switching to box a little easier and gives me acces to certain muscle memories like side b shorten a little easier. I lose out on certain shine techniques: such as shine out of shield is harder. So is multishine in general. And I kinda have to choose between c-stick aerials vs b moves in general, but this is the same as on GCC.
- A: I had to put it somewhere so I put it on the left pinky. Fox only really uses it for nair and uptilt sometimes so it's not so bad. Using A while holding shield to mash shieldgrab does become harder, though.
- L: This lets me wavedash out of shield by sliding my right index finger down from X → L.
- I nearly never press mid-shield or Y. I do sometimes use my right ring finger to use light shield.
- as a matter of fact i just made my midshield button dpad right for unclepunch.
