How long did it take you to switch to box?

I switched to box March 2022. I have not played on GCC at all since then. I didn't play any real opponents until I could beat all the vanilla event matches available in slippi. Then I did unranked. Then I did ranked.

Milestones:

  • 2 months: I felt I could do most tech skill I wanted.
  • ~1 year: I was 80% as fluent as I was on controller
  • ~2 years: I surpassed my controller skills

Below are some of the easy and hard melee things to execute. This stuff depends a bit on what layout/box you use. It also depends on what matchup you are playing.

Easy matchups to learn: puff, ics, falcon, low tiers, luigi

Hard matchups to learn: fox, falco, marth

The easy techskill to implement#

  • up throw upair stuff
  • short hops
  • bair from ledge
  • fastfalling
  • dashdance
  • shield drop
  • shield stop aerials

The harder techskill to implement#

  • lightshielding
  • wavedash back out of dash
  • wavedash out of shield (wavedash back in particular)
  • choosing shorter wavedash angles
  • turnaround uptilt, wavedash turaround uptilt. uptilt in general, tbh.
  • empty pivot
  • double shine / multishine
  • shine turnaround bair
    • Especially difficult when you try to hit the opponent with both the shine and bair.
  • grounded shine out of shield
  • shield drop from un-angled shield
  • ledgedash (I would say it's similar to controller in difficulty. I tournament winner as much as anyone else).
  • Good firefox angles. Basically fox on box has 2 or 3 useful angles to do.
  • ambiguous di for marth / sheik throws (sometimes it is not possible)
